Ahead of Lauri’s German gig in Berlin this week, it seems Germany is gearing up for him with a few articles about New World, for those who haven’t heard it yet.
The articles all pretty much the same thing that we already know about New World and the majority of them seem to be the same as the Finnish articles that came out earlier this year. Anyway I’ve translated one from klatsch-tratsch.de as it seemed like a really good read and actually made a lot of sense.

Cologne. Autumn of 2009: Lauri Ylönen (32), the lead singer of The Rasmus, has just landed in Singapore to meet with his guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi. The two plan to write new songs for the next Rasmus album. But something goes wrong, fortunately: The songs from the sessions in Singapore are in fact quite different, ie electronic and danceable.
One can clearly hear techno influences, the whole thing has nothing to do with the pop-rock songs, the Rasmus made known and which they have sold many millions. What now? The best solution for all involved is obvious: a solo album must be found. “We started the demos and guitar tracks, but it did not feel right,” says Lauri decision making closer.
“The whole time I had the feeling that you have to give this music a chance to develop in another direction, regardless of whether it is compatible with the Rasmus sound or not.”
He continued: “I had a clear idea from the beginning of my solo album. Luckily there were no problems with the rest of the band, I could start immediately. I see my solo career as a second chance. I can finally make my wildest dreams come true. The album, however, has me pretty busy in recent months and will continue to do so. “What is logical, since” the working conditions are different,” explains Lauri.
“When it comes to The Rasmus precise, patient and slow. My solo album is more like a garage production originated – spontaneous and informal. I’ve used, for example, in most songs the vocal tracks of demos! The album will be the way on my own label, Dynasty Helsinki. Now that I have absolute control, I can finally work without being checked, this is fantastic! Besides writing the songs and the texts I have produced themselves, and I also was involved in the video script at the cover design and the selection of the photos. I had my hands pretty much anywhere in there that I’ve missed quite beautiful,” laughs Lauri.
We have probably guessed it: the material from “New World” is completely different than what we know from The Rasmus. But that is precisely the idea. Why must listen to a solo album as well as the master tape? “You do not hear guitar, exactly. Some songs, rock ‘but still more than anything I’ve done so far. The music is very visual, there’s moods, such as those found in Vangelis ‘Blade Runner’, even the whole thing is a tank, Various types of all electronic sound. The album is built up very dramatically, suitable with many long instrumental passages, but for pop radio.”
By the way: Rasmus fans need not worry: “We will begin this summer to write new songs and as soon as possible go into the studio. After all the work with synthesizers, I slowly begin to miss my guitar. I firmly believe that the summer and autumn are fantastic.” But before that Lauri will unveil its new, baby ‘live on stage. “The inspiration came clearly from Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Prodigy and others. We intend to present a superb set, whether in a small sweaty club or at a huge open air stage.”
